if it falls, don’t pick it up
Performance, 13 minute HD video loop. 2016.
Performance documentation filmed in Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chicago’s Chinatown, where I reinterpret mourning rituals in response to an estranged grandmother's funeral. Footage of my body walking in the landscape is overlaid on top of GoPro footage of the same action, with a 10 second delay between the footage. A single carnation dangles and floats in the POV frame. Reverberating bells and a punctuating woodblock mix with the diegetic sound of trains passing and tai chi instructional recordings, creating a hybrid score of the park’s surrounding landscape with elements of a westernized Chinese funeral.
